Today marks the beginning of what I believe will be a very powerful and important series.
Divine guidance is one of the great benefits of being a born again follower of Jesus Christ, and yet, as strange as it may be, we often overlook this benefit and sometimes may even ignore it.
It’s God’s desire to lead us, but it’s our responsibility to HEAR and then FOLLOW His leading.
And let me tell you, God is a great one to follow. He has ALL KNOWLEDGE. Think about this.
- God knows every detail of history going all the way back to Adam and Eve, so He is able to draw on all the experience of humanity and apply it to my life in the present!
- God knows every detail of the future, which explains how the Book of Revelation was written with such vivid detail about the end of this world and the beginning of the next.
- God’s knowledge is perfect. God’s knowledge lives in a constant state of perfection regarding all things past, present and future. Who else can do that?
The Bible says that IF God had any mental weakness, and He doesn’t, His foolishness would be wiser than the wisdom of any man! So why do we turn to everyone but God for guidance?
Consider this. IF God knows everything don’t you think He is a good one to consult about your challenges, your future, your family, your health, or anything else that touches your life?
Our series will not be focused so much on how to hear the Spirit’s voice, but rather on why we ought to TUNE IN to the Spirit’s guidance.
I believe the primary reason we don’t hear the voice of the Spirit is because we are distracted by so many other voices.
We are tuned in to other voices, voices like human reason and logic, and if we’re not careful they replace the voice of the Spirit in our lives.
And that’s what this series will be focused on, listening carefully to God’s thoughts, God’s ideas, and God’s specific direction for every part of our life.
The problem is not only that we don’t hear the voice of the Spirit the problem is that we are not even thinking about tuning in to His voice!
The Bible tells us that our tendency is to lean on our own understanding more than on God’s leading.
The classic scripture on this is Proverbs 3:5-7 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6-In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. 7-Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.”
Not only do we lean on our own understanding too much, but we also lean too much on the understanding of others. We put far too much weight on what others think and too little on what God thinks!
- We ask others what they think we should do and may not even bother to ask the ONLY One who actually knows what we should do 100% of the time!
In one single verse we find the 7 ways His Spirit wants to guide us – Isaiah 11:2.
This is my personal verse of the year for 2011 and I have prayed for hours over each one of these that they’d become a reality in your life and mine.
Spirit of the Lord = Intimacy
Spirit of wisdom = order
Spirit of understanding = clarity
Spirit of counsel = a path
Spirit of might = power
Spirit of knowledge = ability
Spirit of the fear of the Lord = accountability
Each Sunday for the next 9 weeks there will be another teaching on the Spirit’s guidance.
Every Wednesday night we will have an all-church prayer gathering and pray over specific issues of divine guidance.
Every other week you’ll have an opportunity to meet with other believers in a small group for more
discussion and prayer about the Spirit’s leading.
We want everyone in the church to be on the same page for the next three months so that we may TOGETHER experience what it feels like to be led by the Spirit.
Are you up for that church? Does that sound lik something that could help you move forward?
#1 Jesus Modeled What The Spirit-Led Life Looked Like
Isaiah 11 is a glorious, mystical chapter describing the effect of Christ’s millennial reign on earth, a reign which is yet to come.
Writing about the coming Messiah Jesus, Isaiah wrote – Isaiah 11:1.
Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
- This chapter was written about Christ but it applies directly to our daily lives!
Jesus Himself totally depended upon the leading of the Spirit – Isaiah 11:2.
Jesus was conceived by the Spirit, filled with the Spirit, led by the Spirit, He taught scriptures by the instruction of the Spirit, and He was raised from the dead by the power of the Spirit!
That same Spirit lives in you and is available to empower and LEAD in every part of your life!
With all 7 dimensions of the Spirit working perfectly in and through Jesus, He judged situations from the eyes of the Spirit and not merely from a human perspective – Isaiah 11:3.
What was true of Jesus CAN and should BE true of us too! We can be led not by what we see with our natural eyes, but what we see and hear with our supernatural eyes and ears.
That’s why Jesus said over and over again in His teachings; “He who has an ear to hear, let him hear
what the Spirit says.”
Do you remember the scene from Star Wars where Yoda was trying to teach Luke Skywalker how to be led by the force? “Luke, trust your instincts!”
Luke had to be blindfolded to stop trusting in his ability. He had to learn to recognize the force.
And that’s a great picture of us. Sometimes God has to put the blindfold on us, He has to put us in the dark and says learn to follow Me not by what you see but what you know in your spirit!
What follows in the rest of this chapter is a beautiful, prophetic picture of Christ’s millennial reign on earth.
But let’s make a shift and think of these scriptures as a picture of what can be in our life now IF we will learn to be led by the Spirit – Isaiah 11:6-9
Have you ever seen the TV commercial about Travelers Insurance? Their byline is “Travelers takes the scary out of life”. That’s what being led the Spirit does!
#2 Being Led By The Spirit Gives Us A Distinct Advantage In Life
Think about it. If I can learn to be led by the All-Knowing Spirit of God it sets me heads and shoulders above everyone around me.
Most of the people in our life are being led by their own instincts, their own limited knowledge. They go through life hoping that they know what they’re doing.
But when we have heard from God, when we have clear direction from the Holy Spirit, we can move confidently forward because we know-that-we-know we are on the right track!
- How awesome is that?
Being led by the Spirit is so powerful, so full of potential, that we really have no idea how much can be achieved through one life that is completely in sync with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:25 “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
NrIV: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us march in step with the Spirit.”
MSG “Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives.”
AMP “If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.]”
1 Corinthians 2:10-16
I want to give you a personal challenge.
- For the next 12 weeks I want you to pray Isaiah
11:2 every day.
- Ask God to fill you with their supernatural
power of His Spirit that brings intimacy, order, clarity, a path, power,
ability and accountability!
