Second Chances

Second Chances

We serve a God of second chances. He allows us to begin and begin again. The book of Hosea is a great story of how God gives us second, third and fourth chances to begin again. It’s hard to imagine God would ask His servant and prophet, Hosea to marry a prostitute, but that is exactly what He did.

Hosea 1:2 says, When the Lord first spoke to Hosea, the Lord told him, “Marry a prostitute and have children with that prostitute. The people in this land have acted like prostitutes and abandoned the Lord.”

Hosea does as the Lord commanded him and takes Gomer as his wife. This story is both tragic and fascinating.  Gomer’s relationship with Hosea parallels the lives of God’s chosen people (the Israelites and Christians today).

Throughout their marriage, Gomer is unfaithful to Hosea. She goes back to her old life—prostituting herself. Hosea remains faithful to her. He no doubt is hurt and disappointed in Gomer’s choices but repeatedly offers her his love and forgiveness. He allows her many chances to put him first place in her life and she continuously goes back to her old ways each time.

James 4:4-5 says, You unfaithful people! Don’t you know that love for this evil world is hatred toward God? Whoever wants to be a friend of this world is an enemy of God. Do you think this passage means nothing? It says, “The Spirit that lives in us wants us to be his own” (GW).

God feels this way when we give our heart to the things of this world. When we flirt with the world, the consequences of our sin put us at odds with God. He must be first in our love and affection.

Do you need a second or third chance today? Ask God to help you begin again today. Have you experienced a second or third chance? Please share your story below.
