Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence. God has done all this. He has restored our relationship with him through Christ, and has given us this ministry of restoring relationships. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 GW

Back in the 1850’s missionaries from Europe were sent to the Fiji Islands. When the missionaries arrived, the people were involved in warfare and Cannibalism. The people were at war, and they lived to consume their enemies. They did not have a written language. They were saved and the missionaries taught them how to read.

Some time later a businessman—an atheist—came to Fiji. He talked to the chief. When he noticed the Bible he said the only reason they want you to be a Christian is so they can control you. The chief said, “See that rock. See the bashed brains of our enemies? If we weren’t Christians, you’d be there right now.”

The chief was saying, Jesus gave us a new nature—a new way to live. As they came to know Christ, their old way of doing life fell away. They became a new species that never existed before.

Christianity is not a new coat of paint, but a brand new person. Jesus lives inside of us. To be in Christ happens in faith, and is entirely a work of God. Our part is to believe and put the full weight of our faith on Him. God does the rest. He gives us a witness inside that we are His child.

You might not feel like a Christian sometimes, but by faith you are made new. You have His new life inside of you. You begin to see things differently. To experience a heart transformation—that’s what it means to follow Christ.
