#6 & 7—Brotherly Kindness and Love

#6—Add to Godliness, Brotherly Kindness

The Greek meaning for brother kindness comes from the word Philadelphia, defined as brotherly love or love of the brethren.

A Sunday School teacher was in the process of teaching the Ten Commandments to her third grade class. She pointed out a specific commandment about parents, “Honor thy father and mother.” Then she asked, “Is there a commandment that refers to brothers and sisters?”  One little girl quickly responded, “Oh yes teacher, ‘Thou shalt not kill!’”

Everything we learn about discipleship won’t work unless we add acts of brotherly kindness to our faith.

God, in His wisdom, designed our spiritual life to be enmeshed with the Body of Christ. We learn the disciplines of forgiveness, compassion, long suffering, and all nine fruits of the Spirit in the church.

There is no need to write you about love for each other. You, yourselves have been taught by God how you should love one another. And you have, in fact, behaved like this toward all the believers in all of Macedonia. So we beg you, our friends, to do even more.[1]

7—Add to Brotherly Kindness, Love

And while we are commanded to love one another in the Body of Christ, we must never forget our love for those in the world without Christ.

Love for others will spawn a continuous growth process in the life of a true disciple of Jesus Christ.

Love is the acid test of our development.

These are the qualities you need, and if you have them in abundance, they will make you active and effective in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if you do not have them, you are so shortsighted that you cannot see and have forgotten that you have been purified from your past sins.

So then, my friends, try even harder to make God’s call and his choice of you a permanent experience; if you do so, you will never abandon your faith. In this way you will be given the full right to enter the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And so I will always remind you of these matters, even though you already know them and are firmly grounded in the truth you have received.[2]
