God’s Word is very clear. The question of whether we are daily living filled with the Spirit is a vitally important question, and one we need a good answer for.
Famed evangelist, D.L. Moody frequently preached on the need to be filled with the Spirit. One day someone asked, “Why do need to be filled again and again with the Holy Spirit?”
He replied, “Because we leak!”
The radio teacher, J. Vernon McGee told the story about the day he attended the Rose Bowl Parade. The theme of the Rose Bowl that year was “Be Prepared.” One beautiful float suddenly sputtered and coasted to a stop right in front of J. Vernon McGee.
Somehow, in the excitement of getting prepared for the parade they had forgotten to fill up the truck that was pulling the float. The entire parade was held up until someone could run and get a can of gas and get it moving again. He couldn’t help but notice the irony. Whose float was it? The Standard Oil Company!
Think of it. Even with all its vast oil resources, they had simply run out of gas! J. Vernon said, “As I looked at that float, I couldn’t help but think, That’s a picture of many Christians today. They are beautiful on the outside, they have vast resources from God available to them, but somehow they forget to fill up. They have no spiritual power.”
When you and I run out of the Spirit, we affect someone’s parade. We influence our family and our friends. We weaken our church, and ultimately we undermine the cause of Christ in the world.
The most important thing I can ask myself is, am I filled?
Is my spiritual fuel gauge accurate, or am I running on empty. Am I thinking I’m full and almost ready to run out?
Jesus said if we would only ask, seek and knock and we will find all of the spiritual power that we so desperately need.
Luke 11:13 says, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
