While people and things have their rightful place in your life, any one of them can become an idol of your own making.
So how do you know if you’ve actually made an idol?
- You have to search your heart.
- You have to slow down long enough to examine your life and ask the hard questions.
A good place to start might be your Google history. What are you constantly searching for? Google probably has you figured out a lot better than you have yourself figured out!
Another good starting point for uncovering your hidden idols is to consider what disappoints you? Many of us carry sadness in our hearts that life didn’t turn out the way we had hoped. Examine why something disappoints you in the first place.
Overwhelming disappointment can be a sign that someone/something has become more important to you than God. You may be disappointed because you placed your longing and your hope in them instead of God.
- The height of your career.
- The weakness of your children.
- The inevitable decline of your body.
The things that disappoint us are usually the things we constantly complain about, so ask a trusted person what your complaint list looks like.
If I constantly complain about money, then I need to examine what’s behind that. What we complain about reveals what matters to us, and what has power over us.
What disappoints you? Does it reveal an idol in your life?
