Developing a Listening Ear toward God

Developing a Listening Ear toward God

A really great question to ask ourselves when we desire to hear God’s voice is, “Where is God at work in my life?” That question is at the very heart of what it means to be a follower of Christ.

  • What is God doing now?
  • What is God saying now?
  • What is God wanting to do in and through me?

And here’s the beautiful thing about developing an ear for God:  when we consistently hear what God is saying to us, that’s a very clear sign that we are growing in the Lord.

Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons (huios) of God.”

Babies cry “Abba,” [daddy, my daddy].

There are three levels of listening to God’s voice:

  1. Crisis level: “God help me!”
  2. Intermittent level: run hot and cold
  3. Constantly abiding level: trusting God from the bottom of your heart

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD ’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to GOD!”[1]
